Using Microsoft Word 2003 to Create Web Pages
Level I

Utilizing Microsoft Word is a simple and fast way to create a web page.  If you have interest in creating a single simple page site, read through this document and follow the suggestions.  If you would like to create a more advanced site utilizing Word, please see the Level II document.

Overview

Creating a simple page site is accomplished just as you would create a new text document in Word. Enter the text and graphics as you would like to see it on the web, then save the document as a web page.

1) Open Microsoft Word

·        Click File from the Menu Bar located at the top of your screen.

·        Click New  -  Blank Document

2) Enter your information

·        Enter text and insert graphics (pictures) as you would like to see them on your page.   This would include centering, color of text, etc.  In essence, create the document in the manner in which you would like to see your web page.

·        To view your page before you transfer it to myfolder   Click File, then Web Page Preview

3) Save your work

·        Click File, then Save as.   A window will appear with “Save as” in the upper left corner.

·        At the center bottom of the window you will see File Name:

Enter the word index  in the white space next to File Name:

·        Underneath File Name: you will see Save as type:

·        Click the arrow on the right side of the box and a drop down list will appear.  Scroll down until you see Web Page or Web Page (*.htm or *.html) Click on this option.

·        On the left side of the window you will see Desktop. Click on it, then click the Save button. This will save the file to the desktop.

You have now saved the file, named ‘index.htm’ to the Desktop.   If you added graphics or a picture to your page, you will see a folder on the desktop named index_files.  This is where your graphics and pictures are stored.

4) Log in to your account.

·        If you’re using a computer with the Microsoft 2000 or XP operating system, start Internet Explorer and go to myfolder.unomaha.edu.

·        Log in to your myFolder account using your UNO NetID.

·        In your directory you will see a folder named public_html.   This is the folder where you store your web files

5) To move your files from the desktop to your folder, you can drag and drop them.

·        Double click on public_html.  This will open this folder.

·        If the public_html window is taking up the whole screen, click on the restore down button , located in the upper right side of the window.  This will make the window smaller so you can see part of your desktop..

·        Click the minimize button  on Word.   You should now be able to see the Desktop.

·        Locate your index.htm file and the index_files folder (if you used graphics).   Drag (copy) the index.html file to the public_html folder and then drag the index_files folder to the public_html folder.

You’re done!

6) To see your files from the web, the address would be:

myweb.unomaha.edu/~UNOnetID.     Replace UNOnetID with your UNOnetID account name. Make sure to enter the slash / and tilde “~” symbol before your UNO NetID.
