Dears,
As you may know, at the moment I am Schonbrunn
Visiting Professor working on my
research in the Institute of
Mathematics of the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem. It has been suggested (if not requested) that at
least occasionally I write a report on what is going on with me. I am
not sure if my Jerusalem Reports are going to be of any
interest but let me try... This is the first report from Jerusalem
written on my second day here.
(The pictures are clickable.)
Just before I left Omaha
I was somewhat busy with normal duties (teaching and service), but
what was really on my mind was the upcoming trip and preparations for it.
Since my old laptop
broke, I was forced to consider getting a
replacement for it. After much deliberation, we bought a PowerBook
G4 15"
from
Apple. MacOS X Tiger is really a version of Unix and the transition from
Linux to Mac is easy and I have (almost) everything I need on my
machine. The truth is that since the first day I got it, I have been in love
with my Mac, I have been happy
and my Penguin Tux gets upset because of that
.
Also Gosia have been very nice this year and Santa Claus brought her a new
digital toy:
My trip to Jerusalem
started on the very Christmas Day, around 4PM. First I flew to Newark on a
small regional jet (3 hours flight), and directly to Tel Aviv on Boenig
777-200 (10 hours). When the captain welcome us aboard 777 in English and then
in Hebrew, his greetings reminded me about the work that I should, but had
not finished before my trip: the paper Sheva-Sheva-Sheva: Large
Creatures has been accepted to Israel Journal of Mathematics and
I should prepare the final version of it. Since 777 is
sheva-sheva-sheva (in Hebrew), you may guess what I was working
with during the flight....
Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv was totally rebuilt and it is so nice, big,
convenient and beautiful now! I was so sorry that my camera was packed in
my suitcase (so I could not take any pictures) And the border procedures
changed to very simple ones, no forms, no lines, everything goes very fast
and smoothly....
I am renting an appartment in the North part of Jerusalem, on Rehov Sheshet
Hayamim, i.e., Six Days Street. I guess everybody knows which
six days is this street name refering to. Some pictures of my appartment
and surroundings:

The place is not large, but it is very nice. And the landlords are very nice
people.
Tuesday was my first day in Jerusalem and I spent most of it on getting
organized. So I went to Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University.
| I have not noticed any significant changes there (as compared to July
2004): |
 |
 |
 |
| There are new beautiful things in the building of the Einstein
Institute of Mathematics |
 |
 |
 |
| Some old traditions are still alive - like public puzzle place |
 |
 |
| My office is the same as usual |

Of course, I met with Saharon and we discussed
our plans for the coming year. Well, my tasks are very simple:
- help Saharon in finishing some of his almost finished papers (like
509, 538, 707 - if you do not know what that is check here)
- finish as much of my old debts as possible. So I will finish
proofreading of 777 and then I will work on 890 to finish it soon, and then
on a continuation of that, and then I will go back to 670 and
then....
I guess you got the picture - I am going to be busy. I mean
BUSY. Wish me luck.
A much longer Polish version of this report is available
here.
The next report may (but does not have to) be posted on or around February
1st, 2006... Meanwhile: Happy and Productive New Year!!!
Yours,
Andrzej
