Corrigendum
As pointed by
Prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Nawotka, I was following a common
misconception when I wrote that Armenia was the first state to
adopt Christianity. Of course, everything depends on our definitions, but it
seems to be a historical fact that the Kingdom of Osroene was the first
one to become a Christian state. It is worth remembering that:
- a Christian council was held at Edessa as
early as 197;
- king Abgar IX (177 - 212) of Osroene embraced the
Christian faith (...) and under him Christianity became the official
religion of the kingdom;
- there are also legends of Abgar V of
Edessa, who supposedly corresponded with Jesus and adopted
Christianity as the official religion, but those seem to be just that -
legends.
If you are interested in Osroene, you may have a look at these pages, but I
am not sure how reliable is the info there.
