Dr. Woody's New Book:  How Can We Talk About That?
How Can We Talk About That? aims to empower parents to do the unthinkable: consciously and effectively take charge of their child's sex education. The book guides parents to cast aside our culture's typical legacy about sex education--"Don't ask, don't tell." It shows them how to make sure that they know more about sex than their kids. Most parents sincerely want to give their child both the facts of sex and moral guidance, but, because of their own personal hang-ups, they cannot figure out how to do this.

Instead of the "wait and see" or "wait and worry" approach, Dr. Woody shows parents how to get prepared, get over hang-ups, and get smarter about and more comfortable with sexual topics than their kids are. With new commitment and skills, parents can help their young people avoid the serious sexual risks in today's world.

Step by step, this book helps moms and dads take inventory of their own sex lives and possible hang-ups and adopt a parental team approach toward their child's sex education, including deciding on the moral values and standards about sex that they want to pass on to their child. Following this preparation, readers learn the central sexual issues that kids need to learn about at each stage of development. By taking charge through these steps, parents can benefit from resolving their own sexual concerns as well as fostering their children's healthy sexual development.

Woody has extensive experience as a clinician and has provided individual, couple, family, and sex therapy to clients for over two decades. She is also the author of Treating Sexual Distress: Integrative Systems Therapy (Sage, 1992), a textbook widely used in training programs for family therapists. Dr. Woody has been a frequent presenter at national professional conferences. She is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a Certified Sex Therapist (American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists).

Dr. Woody has published research and other articles on sexuality, sex therapy, divorce adjustment, professional ethics, youth mentoring, and other topics.   Along with colleague Henry D'Souza, she developed the Sexual Interaction System Scale, which is included in the Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures (Sage, 1998). She holds a PhD in English from Michigan State University and an MSW from Western Michigan University.  In Nebraska, she is a licensed marriage and family therapist and licensed clinical social worker. She holds similar professional licenses in Florida that are currently on inactive status.
