Rene Leblanc

Rene LeBlanc was immortalized in Longfellow's Evangeline in the following quotes.
“Rene Leblanc will be here anon, with his papers and his inkhorn.” (p. 37)
Footnote: Rene Leblanc. That the notary was actually named Rene Leblanc will be seen in this sentence in the petition of the Acadians to their king: “Rene Leblanc (our public notary) was taken prisoner by the Indians when actually traveling in your Majesty’s service, his house pillaged, and himself carried to the French fort, from whence he did not recover his liberty, but with great difficulty, after four years captivity.” (p. 37)

and

“Finding among the children of Penn a home and a country. There old Rene Leblanc had died; and when he departed, Saw at his side only one of all his hundred descendants” (p.101)

He was
deported to New York in 1755 with his wife and 2 youngest children. Already 71
and unwell, he got as far as Philadelphia, where he found three others of his
children. He died there almost at once.
He was a notary.
