The
following novels
are listed chronologically, not alphabetically by author.
Some authors have more than one. Those reviewed are
hyperlinked.
"IP" after means "in print," and novels with an R
are recommended. Visitors are still advised to read the review;
just
because I recommend it doesn't mean you'll like it. Also, unless
I've read the book myself, I don't use R.
Read what the reviewer has to say.
A little essay on my
general criteria for judging historical fiction: The
Art of Historical Fiction. And perhaps of interest on
the academic front, the forthcoming chapter "Alexander as
Icon: Some Socio-Political Contexts of Alexander the
Great in Twentieth-Century Fiction," Alexander's
Empire: From Formulation to Decay, Waldemar Heckel and P. V.
Wheatley, eds (Claremont, CA: Regina Books, 2006)
Want to submit a review
for
a book I haven't reviewed (especially foreign language
novels)?
Or do you have an alternative view, or think I left out something
important
in the reviews I've done?
Email
me. I won't promise to post your review, but I'll
certainly
give it a fair reading. I'm not adverse to alternative, even
opposing
opinion. As Mark Twain said, "It's a difference of opinion that
makes
horse races." I do, however, ask that all reviews be thoughtful,
articulate, and spell-checked.
For reasons of time
constraints,
I'm unable to review books about Greece or Rome generally, though I've
read a number of them. If you'd like my opinion on one, feel free
to send me email, and if I've read it, I'll tell you what I thought.
You're free to link to
any
of the reviews here -- I'd be flattered -- but if you wish to quote
portions
of them on another page, please contact me first, for permission.
If you're utilizing them for a print review, or writing a paper, please
give the proper citation. Thanks.
