WELCOME TO THE CENTER!

The City of Omaha has grown dramatically in the last 100 years. To the right you will see a map of what comprised Omaha in 1905. In 1905, the center of the City was located at 29th and Nicholas streets (shown with the red X). Today, the center of the city has moved west and south and is now located at 84th and Martha. Click the 2005 Omaha Center link above to see Omaha's center today.

The University of Nebraska - Omaha was established in 1907 and located at approximately 60th and Dodge. As you can see from the city boundaries in 1905, the City only extened to 48th Street as a western boundary. The purple X to the west of the 1905 City limits is the location of UNO today.

The center of Omaha was calculated using the area covered within a polygon constructed in ArcMap around the edge of the City. A mean center calculation was used which identifies the geographic center (or the center of concentration) for a set of features (ArcMap 9.2 Help).

The basemap of Omaha in 1905 is a paving map done by the City Engineer's Office and was obtained from the web site of the Omaha Public Library. The map can be found at: 1905 City Map
